Pregnancy is a special and beautiful time for every woman, but it can also bring anxiety and concerns-especially regarding the safety of cosmetics. Many women worry about whether skincare products might be harmful during pregnancy, as there is considerable discussion about certain ingredients. While most cosmetics are not intended to harm you or your baby, there are indeed some ingredients that should be avoided while pregnant.

The main ingredients to avoid during pregnancy are retinoids (such as retinyl palmitate,  retinol, retinal, r-retinoate etc,) and high concentrations of salicylic acid. Retinoids are linked to birth defects when taken orally, and while topical use is less risky, experts recommend avoiding them altogether during pregnancy. Salicylic acid is generally considered safe in low concentrations (under 2%), such as those found in many over-the-counter products, but higher doses-like those in chemical peels-should be avoided.

If you used creams containing retinoids or salicylic acid before realizing you were pregnant, do not panic. The risk from incidental exposure is low, especially with topical products. As soon as you learn you are pregnant, simply stop using these products. There is no strong scientific evidence that brief, topical use of these ingredients causes harm, but it is best to avoid them as a precaution.
